Michael's Story

Michael is 16 years old and has cerebral palsy affecting the left side of his body. His arm, trunk and leg are difficult to control. Michael has attended the centre for five years and is currently studying for his 'A' levels, and planning to go to university next year. During his most recent therapy block, Michael asked to work on his walking which was becoming more difficult and noticeably different. He was also falling twice a day. Michael was experiencing a lot of pain in his neck and shoulders and he wanted therapy to help this.

During his two week therapy block Michael attended the centre every day. Michael worked together with two physiotherapists on loosening his muscles and helping him to learn new patterns of co-ordination to help his body work more effectively.

At the end of the therapy block Michael had no pain and was only falling occasionally. Therapists videoed Michael's walking at the beginning and at the end of the block and he was able to see a marked improvement in the quality of his walking. Michael was given written advice and photographs from therapy sessions showing how he could continue to help himself at home. Michael was pleased with the results of his therapy and plans to attend the centre for a block of therapy next year.
